Kuil Mesir dibina untuk penyembahan rasmi dewa-dewi dan memperingati firaun-firaun di Mesir purba serta wilayah-wilayah di bawah kawalan Mesir. Kuil dianggap sebagai rumah dewa-dewi atau raja yang didedikasikan. Di dalamnya, orang Mesir melaksanakan pemujaan utama agama Mesir: memberikan persembahan kepada dewa-dewi, melakonkan mitologi mereka dalam perayaan, dan menangkis kuasa-kuasa kekacauan. Ritual-ritual ini dianggap perlu agar dewa-dewi terus menegakkan maat, ketertiban alam semesta. Menjaga dewa-dewi adalah kewajipan firaun, yang memperuntukkan banyak sumber untuk pembinaan dan penyelenggaraan kuil. Firaun melimpahkan sebahagian besar tugas-tugas ritual mereka kepada para kahin, tetapi kebanyakan rakyat dikecualikan daripada penyertaan langsung dalam upacara dan dilarang memasuki kawasan paling suci kuil. Namun begitu, kuil merupakan tapak keagamaan penting bagi semua lapisan masyarakat Mesir, yang datang ke sana untuk berdoa, memberikan persembahan, dan mendapatkan bimbingan takahun.

Bahagian paling penting kuil ialah ruang suci, yang biasanya mengandungi imej dewa kultus mereka. Bilik-bilik di luar ruang suci semakin lama semakin besar dan rumit, sehingga kuil berkembang daripada kuil kecil pada akhir Mesir Prasejarah (akhir alaf keempat SM) kepada bangunan batu besar pada Kerajaan Baru (sekitar 1550–1070 SM) dan berikutnya. Bangunan-bangunan ini merupakan antara contoh terbesar dan paling tahan lama seni bina Mesir purba, dengan elemen-elemennya disusun dan dihiasi mengikut simbolisme keagamaan yang kompleks. Susun atur tipikalnya terdiri daripada dewan-dewan tertutup, halaman terbuka, dan pintu gerbang tonggak pedaka yang sejajar dengan laluan yang digunakan untuk perarakan perayaan. Sebuah kuil besar memiliki tanah yang luas dan memperkerjakan ribuan orang awam untuk memenuhi keperluannya. Oleh itu, kuil merupakan pusat ekonomi dan keagamaan yang penting. Para kahin yang mengurus institusi berkuasa ini amat berpengaruh, dan walaupun secara zahirnya tunduk kepada raja, mereka mungkin merupakan cabaran besar terhadap kekuasaan raja.

Pembinaan kuil di Mesir berterusan walaupun negara mengalami kemerosotan dan akhirnya jatuh ke tangan Empayar Rom pada 30 SM. Dengan kedatangan agama Kristian, agama tradisional Mesir menghadapi penindasan yang semakin meningkat, dan kultus kuil punah antara abad keempat hingga keenam Masihi. Bangunan-bangunan ini mengalami kerosakan dan diabai selama berabad-abad. Pada awal abad kesembilan belas, gelombang minat terhadap Mesir purba melanda Eropah, melahirkan disiplin Mesirologi dan menarik semakin ramai pengunjung ke peninggalan-peninggalan peradaban ini. Puluhan kuil masih berdiri, dan beberapa menjadi tarikan pelancongan terkenal di dunia yang menyumbang besar kepada ekonomi Mesir moden.
