Adalah amalan biasa di dalam dokumen undang-undang untuk memetik penerbitan lain dengan menggunakan singkatan piawai bagi tajuk setiap sumber. Singkatan juga boleh didapati bagi perkataan-perkataan biasa atau frasa undang-undang. Petikan dan singkatan sebegitu boleh ditemui dalam keputusan mahkamah, statut, peraturan, rencana jurnal, buku, dan dokumen lain. Di bawah adalah senarai asas bagi singkatan-singkatan biasa. Oleh kerana setiap penerbit menggunakan amalan berbeza merujuk kepada bagaimana singkatan dicetak, seseorang mungkin melihat singkatan mempunyai titik atau tanpanya bagi setiap huruf. Sebagai contoh, Code of Federal Regulations mungkin disingkatkan sebagai "C.F.R." atau "CFR".
