Proxima Centauri merupakan bintang terdekat dengan Bumi selepas Matahari, terletak pada jarak 4.25 tahun cahaya di buruj selatan Sentaur. Ditemui pada tahun 1915 oleh Robert Innes, ia merupakan sejenis bintang kecil berjisim rendah yang terlalu samar untuk dilihat dengan mata kasar, dengan magnitud ketara 11.13. Proxima Centauri merupakan sebahagian daripada sistem najam Alpha Centauri, yang dikenal pasti sebagai komponen Alpha Centauri C, dan berada pada 2.18° daripada arah barat daya pasangan AB Alpha Centauri. Ia kini berada pada kedudukan 12,950 AU (0.2 ly) daripada pasangan bintang AB, yang ia mengorbit dengan tempoh kira-kira 550,000 tahun. Nama Latinnya bermaksud 'bintang terdekat Centaurus'.
Proxima Centauri ialah sejenis bintang kerdil merah dengan jisim kira-kira 12.5% daripada jisim Matahari (M☉), dengan ketumpatan purata kira-kira 33 kali ganda berbanding Matahari. Disebabkan oleh jarak Proxima Centauri dengan Bumi, diameter sudutnya boleh diukur secara langsung. Diameter sebenar adalah kira-kira satu pertujuh (14%) diameter Matahari. Walaupun ia mempunyai kilauan purata yang sangat rendah, Proxima Centauri merupakan sejenis bintang suar yang mengalami peningkatan kecerahan secara dramatik dan rawak disebabkan aktiviti magnetiknya. Proxima Centauri mempunyai dua planet luar suria yang diketahui dengan satu calon planet luar suria: Proxima Centauri b, Proxima Centauri d dan Proxima Centauri c yang dipertikaikan.[nb 3] Proxima Centauri b mengorbit bintang pada jarak kira-kira 0.05 AU (7.5 juta km) dengan tempoh orbit kira-kira 11.2 hari Bumi. Anggaran jisimnya sekurang-kurangnya 1.06 kali ganda berbanding Bumi.[7] Proxima b mengorbit dalam zon boleh didiami Proxima Centauri, dengan julat suhu yang sesuai untuk air cecair wujud di permukaannya, namun disebabkan oleh Proxima Centauri itu sendiri merupakan najam kerdil merah dan bintang suar, kebolehdiaman planet ini berkemungkinan besar tidak dapat ditentukan. Sebuah lagi planet sub-Bumi yang bernama Proxima Centauri d terletak pada kira-kira 0.028 AU (4.2 juta km) mengorbit bintangnya setiap 5.1 hari. Satu lagi calon planet sub-Neptun yang bernama Proxima Centauri c mengorbit pada kedudukan kira-kira 1.5 AU (220 juta km) daripada Proxima Centauri setiap 1,900 h (5.2 yr).[15][16]
